Backstreet’s back alright, but they’re not using BP.

The Backstreet Boys said in a statement today that they’re joining Korn in the boycott against purchasing BP oil. The boy band (can we still call them that?) is currently on tour to promote their “This Is Us” album, and their sojourn across the States will be BP-free.

“I’m devastated by what I’ve seen first hand and on the news,” Nick Carter said in a statement. “I’ve always been a marine activist and seeing pictures of oil-covered animals breaks my heart.”

Said fellow Backstreet member Brian Littrell: “We just played Biloxi last week and I have to tell you people are really worried down there. This boycott is about making a statement, letting people know how we feel and to stand for something.”

In a recent interview with pressofatlanticcity.com AJ talked a bit about leaving Jive and their plans.

Q: What’s next for the group, now that you’ve left your longtime label, Jive?

A: There’s the possibility of moving to a new label or doing a straight distribution deal. The upside is we have the freedom to do whatever we want, to be much more creative, as artists and as performers. We now have the freedom to do whatever we want. If we go with another label, we may have another outlook on the next 17 years for our career.

A lot of us have been talking about playing instruments again, maybe going the Beatles route. We have always emulated groups such as the Stones, the Beatles and the Eagles.

Who knows what could be the future of the Backstreet Boys? The concepts and ideas are infinitely limitless.

Their PSAs will be released in August as part of MENC’s twice-yearly Why Music? radio campaign. The recording took place before the group’s concert at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, VA.
