We got the chance to ask Nick Carter a few questions about his solo album I’m Taking Off, working with Canadian Shawn Desman, and how it feels to finally be out on his own.

iVillage: What’s been the best thing about doing a solo album vs. working with a large group?
Nick Carter: In a band you have to play as a team and sometimes sacrifice your own wants and needs for the better of the group. This can be fun though since you do not have to bear the entire responsibility if something goes bad like a wrong single choice or bad wardrobe [laughing].

Being solo is just the opposite. I have to make all the choices and I have no one to blame but myself. It’s fun though because you can bring those good and bad experiences back to the group and share them. Basically one can help the other.

Nick Carter overcomes personal demons to release “I’m Taking Off”.

Nick Carter has thousands of fans who adore him, but that doesn’t mean a Backstreet Boy can’t have insecurities. The youngest member of the world’s No. 1 selling boy band, now 31, released his first solo album, “Now or Never,” in 2002, but took until this year to release the follow-up, “I’m Taking Off.”

It is a contemporary beat-driven pop album featuring the club joint “Burning Up,” smoother ballad “So Far Away” and a special Canada-only contribution, the synth-laden dance-pop single, “Love Can’t Wait,” co-written with Canadians Shawn Desman and Tebey (Desman also produced it). In Japan, where the album came out in February, the single was the more wistful “Just One Kiss.”

“I had my hands in everything,” says Carter from choosing the photographer to do the album art to shooting the video for “Just One Kiss” himself and selecting the video treatment for “Love Can’t Wait.”

Who wants Nick Carter’s dirty shoes? How about his dirty shoes signed by every member of the Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block? The recent NKOTBSB tour of arenas and stadiums prove there are still thousands of fans who would. Now, add to that a charitable angle and that’s some good dirt.

The Backstreet Boy has come up with a great way to preserve his prized sneakers and continue to help raise awareness about the destruction that mankind is reaping on the environment. And it just might lead to a permanent non-profit, Nick’s Dirty Kicks, somewhere down the road. But for now, it’s all about a pair of used shoes.

During a recent stop in Toronto to promote his solo album, I’m Taking Off, Carter told Samaritanmag that he just came up with the idea the other day.

Nick Carter is primed for takeoff. Or to be more precise, relaunch.

The blond Backstreet Boy’s brand-spanking solo album I’m Taking Off arrived last week, nearly nine years after its predecessor Now or Never. But that gap is no accident, he says.

“Basically, you could say I got cold feet in a sense,” the 31-year-old New Yorker said during a press stop in Toronto. “I took a look at everything around me and saw the direction it was going and said, ‘No, this is not the right time.’

“There are so many things that you need to have in order to develop a solo career. No. 1, you need to know who you are. You have to have a sense of who you are, and who you want the world to know you as. You also have to know the kind of music you want to do. You have to have your mind set. I didn’t. And back then, as a person, I was overweight, I had a lot of issues with drinking and partying and depression. I had all sorts of crazy stuff I was dealing with. That right there is just a recipe for disaster. I basically didn’t take it as seriously as I should have.”
