ABC News posted details of a police report made.

Leslie Carter suffered from an overdose and was under the influence of several drugs before her death, according to an incident report obtained by ABCNews.com from officials who responded to her family’s 911 call.

The report lists three drugs that were found near Leslie: Olanzapine, used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Cyclobenzaprine, a muscle relaxant, and Alprazolam, used to treat anxiety or panic disorders, commonly known as Xanax.

The report reveals that Ginger Carter, Leslie’s stepmom, told authorities that Leslie had “a long history of mental illness and was on medication for her depression.” Ginger said that Leslie seemed depressed the morning of Jan. 30 and fell in the shower. Ginger helped Leslie lie down and periodically checked on her. Late in the afternoon, she discovered that Leslie was not breathing. Robert Carter, Leslie’s father, tried to perform CPR on her. Ginger then called 911.

Update: E! has posted more info. Leslie was estranged from her husband and living with her dad and step-mom Ginger. Bob Carter found Leslie unresponsive not Ginger as some others are saying. Read more about it here.

Back in Action

Nick Carter sold more than 130 million albums with the Backstreet Boys. Now he’s released his second solo album, I’m Taking Off. Carter plays Paradise Rock Club on Feb. 6.

How does performing solo compare to doing a big arena show with the Backstreet Boys?

I enjoy it. I have a four-piece band and I play guitar. There are some things that are similar but for the most part, it’s like a pop-rock show. It allows me to get close with the fans and get personal with them, instead of having them see from the nosebleed sections. I’m fortunate to be able to play venues that size, but I can touch their hands and stuff. I’d rather go see a band in a smaller venue, anyway.

Doesn’t it shrink the production value?

We definitely pushed it to the limit with the solo tour. I felt that it was important to put costumes in it, give it a theme. It’s a spacey-type theme. Me and my band are arriving from outer space and then kind of take off. I come out with a space helmet and space suit. It’s really cool. Everything has come from my mind. It had to be entertaining. The last time I did a solo record, I just got up in front of a mic and sang. It was boring.

Is it easier to record solo or to do an album with the group?

The process was definitely more work, and I gave it a lot more time. There was a lot of stuff happening with NKOTBSB but I’d already made the decision to move forward with the solo album, so there was some pressure. In the long run it paid off because I was able to do both and people saw that. My record was finished before we even started rehearsing.

Is your solo sound different from what people expect?

It was important for me to stay true to who I am—I couldn’t go out there and try to be a country artist or do Slipknot music. It doesn’t alienate fans, or make people look away and cringe. There is dance music, and there’s a little bit of rock influence, but not enough to make it distasteful.

How does someone who’s had such a lengthy career get new fans and keep it fresh?

It’s complicated. People know you in a certain way and it’s hard to change their minds. People are set in their ways and they like what they like. I’m always growing and changing and trying new things, and developing into an entirely different person than I was a couple years ago. You have to do everything you can to get in their faces and remind people. You have to be creative and willing to change.

What are some of the creative things you’ve done to spread the word?

YouTube is really cool. I direct my own videos and I’m been able to get a big following. People see the creative side of me. There’s so many different ways. I was just on Dr. Phil talking about all the things I’ve gone through in my life. I got to give some advice and share some experiences, and I got to perform.

Are you performing any BSB classics on tour?

Oh yeah, you’ve got to take care of the fans. We do “I Want It That Way” and four or five others. We do a rendition of “Larger Than Life” mixed with Kool and the Gang’s “Fresh.” The Backstreet Boys songs are classics, but I gave them a new twist. The audience is satisfied.

What was it like performing at Fenway Park?

It was surreal. You’re walking around and it’s just massive and crazy. Sharing it with the New Kids was the best part. You could see on their faces how happy they were.

If you’re looking to get on Nick Carter’s good side, address him as Lord Balgrott, his “World of Warcraft” character. The former teen heartthrob is such a fan of the online role-playing game that he changed his Twitter avatar to an illustration of the white-bearded guild leader.

It’s not the type of career move — yes, social media management is a part of the game in 2012 — many would expect from the handsome, blue-eyed member of the Backstreet Boys. But compared to his pop peers, Carter, 31, has had one of the strangest career arcs, full of chart-topping hits and embarrassing personal lows.

Drinking, as evidenced by a 2005 DUI arrest, was the cause of many of the singer’s problems.

“My main vice of choice was alcohol, but to the extent of overindulgence and abuse,” Carter said.

It all came to a head in 2008, when Carter was diagnosed with the life-threatening heart disease cardiomyopathy, a result of his hard-partying lifestyle. It got so bad, Carter told People magazine in 2009, that he “went nuts” with alcohol and cocaine the night before the test results came back.

His ability to calmly talk about his troubled past is a sign he’s on the right track. But it’s more than talk — Carter has changed his lifestyle, focusing on strenuous workout routines while leaving the drugs and binge-drinking behind. He said he is even considering going vegetarian (“I like the way the meals taste better, honestly”). Friday, he performs at Rams Head Live.

The change has paid off. Carter, who weighed well over 200 pounds before his health kick, is now in the best shape of his life, he said. Last year, his doctor said he could no longer detect the cardiomyopathy in his heart.

“You can change your life around,” Carter said. “You don’t have to be a victim. But it’s a work in progress every single day. It’s not easy.”

With fewer concerns about his health, Carter turned his focus to the Backstreet Boys and “I’m Taking Off,” his solo album from last year. It took Carter nearly a decade to follow up his gold debut, “Now or Never.”

“I felt as a writer, I wasn’t good enough. As an entertainer, I didn’t know enough,” he said of the delay. “I didn’t know who I wanted to be, and I didn’t know who I was.”

The Backstreet Boys continued to record and tour between “Now or Never” and “I’m Taking Off,” and Carter said that made all of the difference. He leaned on his bandmates while he grew as a performer and writer.

“You can call me a late bloomer, I guess,” Carter said. “But I’m super young, so I can still do it. I like to say I went back to college.”

During that time, Carter and his family starred on an E! reality show, “House of Carters.” The eight-episode season showed the harsh side of a family of entertainers attempting to re-energize their careers. It was a dysfunctional tale, with plenty of bickering and sibling fighting. It made for ugly TV, but according to the singer, it was the catalyst for getting his life on track.

“It really opened my eyes,” he said. “I was overweight. I wasn’t feeling good about myself. It was a pivotal point in my life.”

“House of Carters” was a shocking reminder to longtime fans that the era of boy-band hysteria was firmly in the past. Now, when Carter talks about the height of the Backstreet Boys’ popularity, there’s a sense of pride but also wistfulness.

“There was a lot of competition going on between the different groups, and it was fun,” Carter said, obviously nodding to ‘N Sync. “Everyone was watching MTV for the videos and the music.”

We’re a long way from those days, but Carter is optimistic he and his group will find their place in pop again. (“I think things go in cycles. Hopefully, it’ll come back,” he said.) Until then, he will focus on supporting “I’m Taking Off” and the upcoming Backstreet Boys tours in Australia, Europe and Indonesia.

He’s also working on the next Backstreet Boys album, which begins recording this month. Carter is adamant about the group’s input on the record, perhaps signifying he has truly bloomed as an artist.

“One thing is for sure — we want to write on it,” he said. “We want our influence on it. That’s so important.”

As a Boyband Enthusiast, the first album I remember listening to was the Jackson 5. The first concert I attended was the New Kids on the Block. And though for several years in the 90’s, it seemed boybands might become extinct, by the time I got to college, the craze had circled back around with a vengeance. I attended my first Backstreet Boys concert in 2001 and had a blast, but I didn’t really get to see what all the fuss was about until last summer, when I attended four shows on the NKOTBSB tour and came away from the experience a full-blown Backstreet Boys fan.

Though all four guys elicit ear-piercing squeals from the ladies, it seems none so much as its youngest member and, coincidentally, my fellow Nashvillian, Nick Carter. And while Backstreet Boys will head overseas with the New Kids on the Block this spring to continue their wildly successful run, Nick has a little business to tend to on the homefront first – a nationwide solo tour. His latest solo effort is aptly titled “I’m Taking Off” – why? “I felt like this was my moment,” explains Nick. “I’m rising to the occasion and taking off.” As an accomplished writer, producer, and director, with a solo career that has resulted in more than one million albums sold worldwide, and the next leg of the NKOTBSB tour on the horizon, it seems the Backstreet Boy has become a Backstreet Man. And who better to weigh in on mysterious male behavior?
The Single Woman: A hot topic in my column recently was guys who break up with girls via Facebook/text message/etc. What are your thoughts on that? Punk move, or just avoiding the drama?

Nick Carter: From a guy’s perspective, there is no easy way to break up with a girl. Most of the time, we are afraid of confrontation so if you do it over the phone, in a text message, or even face-to-face it usually never turns out good. Maturity is also a factor to consider. The older you are, the more heartache and break-ups you’ve had. This can make you jaded and essentially more used to it. My best advice is…MAN UP!

TheSW: Why does it seem like guys would sometimes rather hang out with “their boys” than “their girl”?

NC: Having guy time is important to a certain degree. I feel that the best bet is to find someone that can be your guy and girl. How cool is it to be able watch a football game with your girl and at the same time catch a Twilight flick. That’s a best friend…with benefits!

TheSW: Sometimes it seems like when a guy wants out of a relationship, he starts being mean and picking fights to get the girl to break up with him so he can avoid the confrontation. Do you think this is true, and if so, why are some men so afraid of confrontation?

NC: Communication is key to a relationship. If you really love someone and feel they don’t love you back, don’t be afraid to ask what’s wrong. There’s a thing called being the bigger person. You can get answers that you want by confronting the situation head on! Just say, “I feel that you don’t want to be in this relationship, if so that’s okay, you always have the choice to leave or stay.” Say something like that and watch what happens. You might actually be shocked and happy with the outcome.

TheSW: True or False. “Once a player, always a player.” (Feel free to elaborate!)

NC: Love can change everything, but be careful. You have to be sure that the player truly loves you first. Once that happens the game is in YOUR hands.

TheSW: Can men and women ever be “just friends”? I asked your boy Jordan Knight this question and he said no, which caused a bit of controversy. What do you think? Have you ever had a girl who you were just friends with?

NC: This is tricky. You are dealing with hormones and attraction. It is possible, but don’t be fooled. Most guys are always looking at your butt!

TheSW: What are the Top 5 qualities you look for in a girl?

NC: Qualities are like presents to me. I find it exciting discovering the different treasures that each girl possesses. Like Forrest Gump said, “You never know what you’re gonna get.” Guys, I recommend you find, cherish, and appreciate every different quality in our beautiful aliens from Venus.

TheSW: Do guys ever really get “intimidated” by women, or is this something women tell ourselves just to feel better when a guy isn’t interested?

NC: I am sort of a shy guy. Ever since elementary school it was hard for me to talk to girls. I actually don’t mind it when a girl (like Timberland says in his new song) “makes a pass at me.” There are all sorts of guys out there. Some may get intimidated, but in my opinion, there’s not a lot.

TheSW: One of my readers asked: “How can I get my boyfriend to trust me again after I cheated on him/lied to him?” Do you think it’s possible to regain that trust in a relationship? And what are your thoughts on “Once a cheater, always a cheater”?

NC: Love will make you do some silly things. You can be blind and at the same time see the world in a whole new light! Every situation is different. I’m not saying that it’s okay to cheat, but I do believe in second chances. If you are still together that means something. Keep working on your relationship. No one said it would be easy.

TheSW: Fairytale endings – art imitating life, or life imitating art? Is “Happily Ever After” a realistic goal?

NC: I truly believe that everyone deserves to be happy. There is someone for everybody out there. Be prepared, though. Your fairytale may be a little different than those Disney movies you watched when you were little. Searching also tends to get people in trouble. You should let it be organic. It may sound funny, but I suggest you read some astrological signs. You may be surprised how right on they are. We are all made of stars, moons, and water. There’s a bigger thing happening out there. And remember, happiness is in the eye of the beholder, or wait…was that beauty?
